Cyan Backs ÒWay BackÓ

Award-winning indie film to get Seattle premiere

NEW YORK, September 4, 2006—Cyan Pictures has acquired WE GO WAY BACK, the award-winning directorial debut feature from filmmaker Lynn Shelton.  Produced by The Film Company, an innovative new studio, the film will hit theaters in selected cities throughout the fall.

Written and directed by Shelton, a renowned theater director and experimental filmmaker based in Seattle, WE GO WAY BACK saw its world premiere at the 2006 Slamdance Film Festival, where it won Best Narrative Feature and Best Cinematography.

The film follows Kate (Amber Hubert), a young actress with a small theater company who lands her first leading role on her 23rd birthday.  When she reads a cheerfully inquisitive birthday letter from her 13-year-old self (Maggie Brown), it seems she might actually be fulfilling childhood aspirations.

But the letter triggers mounting confusion for Kate, which grows more hauntingly intrusive until, in a surrealistic turn, 13-year-old Katie appears in the flesh, primed for a confrontation.  Beautifully shot and poetically edited, with a stellar soundtrack featuring the Decemberists and Laura Veirs, this resonant film explores the comedy and pain of finding the courage to face oneself.

The acquisition marks a collaboration between two up-and-coming indies.  Led by filmmaker and producer Gregg Lachow, The Film Company is the nationÕs first non-profit studio.  The film provides a perfect fit for Cyan, which kicked off its slate with this summerÕs THE OH IN OHIO.  ÒWe fell in love with WE GO WAY BACK and The Film Company at Slamdance and canÕt wait to introduce them to as many people as possible,Ó said Cyan SVP Scott Bromley.

WE GO WAY BACK is slated for a September 15 premiere in Seattle, with selected theatrical engagements to follow.

The acquisition was negotiated by producer and Film Company head Gregg Lachow and Joshua Newman of Cyan, which holds worldwide rights.

ABOUT THE FILM COMPANY

Led by filmmaker and producer Gregg Lachow and consisting of a core staff of film  professionals, The Film Company is the nation's first non-profit film studio.  The company generates, develops, and produces a yearly season of new films. Our staff is  deeply involved in the artistic steering of the company and forms the core of the production  staff for each project. Generative artists from the local, national, and international scene are invited into our studio, where they will find the artistic and fiscal support necessary to make their films.

The Film Company greenlights artists, not projects.  We give artists whose work we love the greenlight to make the films of their choice. After a year of operation, we have completed principal photography on one short (Your Lights Are Out or Burning Badly by choreographer Gaelen Hanson) and three features (The Telephone Pole Numbering System by William Weiss, The Brand Upon the Brain by Guy Maddin, and We Go Way Back by Lynn Shelton).

ABOUT CYAN PICTURES
